The White Lady
by Beth Trissel

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Ghostly Holiday Time Travel Romance
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Avery Dunham has always been ready to follow her friend, time-traveling wizard, Ignus Burke, on incredible adventures. This time, though, she has serious misgivings. It's just one week before Christmas, but she cannot get him to change his mind. The usually cool and collected magic-wielding leader is wholly obsessed by the portrait of the White Lady whom he is bent on rescuing.

Almost as soon as they begin their journey, it becomes clear their mission is a trap.

Avery was right: this adventure is not going to be like any other.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT ONE:
Avery had a few queries on the tip of her tongue, like, “Are you out of your freaking skull?”
If she didn’t ask, Stan probably would. They’d graduated from high school this past June and worked part-time ‘nothing’ jobs, taking a break before college while finding their way, as Avery’s mother put it. Mostly, they were drawn to Ignus like moths to a flame, especially Avery. Not that he noticed.
If only he’d look at her the way he did the white lady. More and more, the portrait seemed to dominate his thoughts. How could a petite, okay short, girl in a sparkly pink sweater and unicorn leggings compete with this tantalizing beauty?
Avery wasn’t plain, some even referred to her as cute, but exotic didn’t describe her. Quirky, sure. She wouldn’t term her brown eyes deeply affecting, and her face wouldn’t compel men through centuries to her side. The best she could do was plead with him.
“Ignus, be reasonable. Please.”
No reply. He wore his stubborn look. Crossing his arms over a lean chest, he tilted his head to better view the femme fatale on the wall above them.
The tousled brown hair covering his ears and forehead needed a trim. In his red Zombie Preparedness hoodie with a white rescue logo, gray dress pants, and white high-topped sneakers, he was the quintessential nerd. Most importantly, he was a wizard and time traveler with a passion for rescuing lost souls. His fervor for this particular lady was alarming.
Dead Corpse
by Nuzo Onoh
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

GENRE: Horror

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
When the only child of a humble medicine woman is murdered for ritual magic, she will call on all the awesome powers of her deity, the Earth goddess, and exact a terrifying vengeance on an entire village. The angry dead shall rise again and a dark cloud of terror will shroud both the guilty and the innocent in a deadly supernatural curse.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT ONE:

There were three doors leading off the living room. He paused again, uncertain which door to try first. The last thing he wanted was for the witch to hear him trying out the wrong door.

That was when the light came on in the room to his right, seeping out from the high gap underneath the shut door. Fucking witch had wakened. Eze cursed and reached for the light switch on the nearest wall, flooding the living room with light from the single dusty bulb overhead. There was no time anymore for caution or delay. He rushed to the door, his movement surprisingly swift, adrenalin fuelled. He turned the knob and pushed the door in with a loud shout, intent on shrieking terror into the heart of his opponent.

His shout caught in his throat. Hot piss gushed out of his bladder, washing his trousers with terror ammonia. A tight band gripped his heart, squeezing the breath out of his lungs. He stumbled back, backwards to the door through which he’d crashed into the room. His eyes, horror-wide, starred at the apparition before him, the albino girl he had last seen inside a secret shrine, drenched in her own blood, her warm heart pulsating inside the witch-doctor’s bowl. Eze moaned, his lips quivering like a child deprived of food. Her cackle hit him like a bullet, sending chills right through his veins to every nerve in his body.

Daughter of Aithne
by Karin Rita Gastreich

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Fantasy
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Betrayed by her own prodigy, Eolyn stands accused of treason. As power-hungry nobles dismantle her life's work and honor, the desperate queen forges a risky alliance with the ruthless and cunning Mage Corey. Determined to defend her son's claim to the throne of the Mage King, Eolyn prepares for her last and greatest battle, this time against her own sisters in magic.

Across the Furma River, Taesara of Roenfyn is drawn out of seclusion and into an ever-more vicious game of intrigue and war. Subject to the schemes of a shrewd uncle and the mysterious ambitions of the wizards of Galia, Taesara struggles to assert her own destiny, even as she takes up arms to defend her daughter's inheritance.

In the climactic finale to The Silver Web trilogy, threads of love, honor, betrayal, and vengeance culminate in a violent conflict between powerful women, opposed to each other yet destined to shatter a thousand-year cycle of war.

"An enticing and elegant series finale, filled with magic and turmoil."
- KIRKUS REVIEWS

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT TWO:
“Speak plainly, my Lord King,” Eolyn said. “I will not be subject to this cat-and-mouse game. If you do not trust me, if you do not believe me, then say so.”
“I trust your heart, Eolyn,” Akmael replied, “but your heart has led you to ill-advised decisions in the past. For this reason, I am not always inclined to trust your judgment.”
“For the love of the Gods! I am not the confused and frightened girl I was when my brother took up arms against you.”
“No, but you must understand the dilemma you have put me in.”
“The dilemma I have put you in?”
“If you knew of Ghemena’s plan and did not inform me, you were party to treason. If you did not know, then your authority over the magas is uncertain. Either way, the magas must remain bound and imprisoned until this conflict is resolved.”
Eolyn blinked and stepped away. “The magas have lived in peace in Moisehén for more than a decade. You cannot let the action of one woman—”
“Three women. The blatantly treasonous act of three women, all devoted students of yours. They have brought war upon us, Eolyn. Who knows how many others among your followers support them?”
“The magas who remain in my service have done nothing to merit suspicion.”
“All magas merit suspicion.” Akmael hesitated at her stricken look. He let go a slow breath and softened his tone. “There is a history here that we have not yet overcome, Eolyn. You, of all people, must understand that. Too many of our subjects still remember the war against my father.”
“And the purges that followed?” she shot back.
“The violence that tore this kingdom apart,” he conceded. “Right or wrong, the magas were left with the blame. We must manage this situation carefully, to protect you and your daughters. To see that justice is done.”
GUEST POST:
Five Reasons You Should Read “Daughter of Aithne”
1.   Women rule the world.
You’ve probably read fantasy novels that feature one or a few remarkable women who earn their spot as “one of the guys,” but when was the last time you read a fantasy where all the key roles were filled by women? Daughter of Aithne sets the genre on its head by populating a magical, medieval world with women of power. Rival queens take up arms against each other, women warriors charge into battle, and sisters in magic are forced to choose sides as the ultimate contest for the throne determines the fate of four kingdoms.
2.   Romantic leads to die for.
A woman-centered story, Daughter of Aithne is nonetheless packed with romantic tension. Determined, passionate men prove worthy – if sometimes unreliable – suitors for the women they serve. Eolyn’s partner in magic, Akmael, will win your respect with his capacity to cross the barriers of death in order to protect the ones he loves. The enigmatic and irresistibly sexy Mage Corey will keep you up at night wondering about the secrets he keeps – and the true nature of his ambitions. The charismatic warrior Prince Savegre will steal your heart as Queen Taesara’s most important – and handsome! – ally in the battle for the throne of Moisehén. These and many other romantic threads add spice to each turn of the page.
3.   War without villainy.
One of the greatest things about Daughter of Aithne is that there is no true villain. Opposed to each other, Eolyn and Taesara are nonetheless very likable characters.
Sole heiress to a forbidden tradition of magic, Eolyn starts The Silver Web series as a refugee. By the third book, Eolyn’s life-long struggle to restore women’s magic has culminated in a great love with Akmael, the Mage King of Moisehén. Eolyn and Akmael have ruled in peace for more than a decade, but trouble descends on the kingdom when Akmael’s daughter by his first marriage, Eliasara, lays claim to Akmael’s throne.
Eliasara’s mother, Taesara, joins the fight to take up arms against Akmael and Eolyn. Due to the beliefs of her people, Taesara eschews all magic. Yet she faces many of the same challenges as Eolyn as they lead their people into war. Taesara has a dash of dogmatism, but she is a woman of honor and compassion. Under different circumstances, these two remarkable queens would have found much in common with each other, and might even have become friends.
4.   An impossible choice.
Faced with equally likeable characters locked in a powerful and poignant conflict, readers of Daughter of Aithne will have a very hard time deciding who to root for! Eolyn and Taesara are both admirable women in their own right. How is it possible time and fate has dragged them into war against each other? Yet wage war they must, and as in all wars, there can be only one victor.
5.   The end you never saw coming.
So how will it all finish? I can’t give that away, of course, but I can promise you this: the denouement of Daughter of Aithne is unlike anything you’ve read in fantasy. The path of these formidable women – the choices they make and the fates they weave for their people – will amaze and inspire you.  Daughter of Aithne is the book I’ve always wanted to write; I hope you’ll soon discover it’s the book you’ve always wanted to read.
Too True to be Good
by Mary E. Thompson
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

GENRE: Contemporary Romance

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
His life was good…
Zach Bennett was content to go to work, hang out with his family and friends, and entertain a woman once in a while. As his family found love all around him, he was content to stay single. Unattached. Happy.
Besides, he had enough to worry about with a new chef breathing down his neck for his job.
She faced the truth every day…
Gianna Brooks always wanted to work with people. She saw enough growing up to know kids need all the help they can get. They deserved to be safe. Loved. Happy.
Which is why she’s determined to get her new client into a forever home.
But the truth isn’t always good…
The last thing Zach needs is a little girl showing up on his doorstep claiming she’s his. Her social worker hot on her heels, and demanding a place to stay, definitely doesn’t make it any better. Especially with Gianna’s curvy body and bedroom eyes, and his daughter’s sad sweetness, making him consider keeping both of them.
Gianna knows she should run. Zach knows he should send them away. But neither of them can resist the pull toward the other.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT TWO:

Gianna’s breath caught in her throat. The way Zach looked at her made her feel like a woman instead of just a caretaker for a little girl. He saw her. The woman beneath the mask that she carefully constructed to keep people out.

He stepped forward, holding her gaze. His lips quirked up at the edges. He knew how much she wanted him. How badly he affected her. The jerk. She didn’t want him to realize he held all the power.

Then his gaze slipped. His throat moved with his effort to swallow. He licked his lips and ran a hand through his hair. A nervous habit?

Maybe she wasn’t the only one drowning in desire.

“I know we said we wouldn’t do this again, Gianna, but I can’t resist you.”

Her heart skipped. She’d never had a man speak to her like that. Never had one who could turn her on with just a look and a raspy voice loaded with… need.

“What are you going to do about it?” she asked, cocking her hip and raising her eyebrows.

He grinned and rushed toward her. She thought about running, but who was she kidding. She wanted him to catch her.

AUTHOR BIO:

Mary E. Thompson grew up loving to read, like a good little girl. Many nights she would fall asleep with the flashlight still turned on as she hid under the covers trying to finish the last few pages of a book. As an adult, the light from her ereader means she doesn't need a flashlight, but she still stays up way too late to finish a book.

When Mary's not reading, she's playing with her two kids or living out her own real life romance novel with her hubby. She has a weakness for chocolate, especially when it's paired with peanut butter, and has been known to have a bad day just because there's no chocolate in the house. Unless there’s wine. Then everything is okay.

Mary grew up in Buffalo, New York and swears she's the only local to never ski or snowboard. Soccer was always her sport, with a couple adventures white water rafting and skydiving to keep things interesting. Mary moved to South Carolina for college but missed Buffalo every day. Yeah, she thinks she's crazy, too. She somehow convinced her South Carolina born and bred hubby to return to Buffalo to raise their kids and live out their lives. He’s still not sure what he was thinking.
